2014 - the Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum approved Buru Energy’s gas exploration program

The Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum approved Buru Energy’s gas exploration program, giving the company the green light to begin fracking shale gas reserves located between 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) and 5 kilometres (3 miles) underground.

The same year, members of the Yawuru people’s Native Title decision making body voted overwhelmingly against Buru’s plan to frack on their Native Title land. They expressed concerns that there was a lack of information about the safety of fracking following a reported gas leak at Yulleroo in 2013.
